New Biovitrum Digital Pathology project in Chelyabinsk region

The BioVitrum company has completed the implementation of a pilot project on Digital Pathology in the Chelyabinsk region (Russia). On the basis of City Clinical Hospital No. 1, Chelyabinsk, there was installed a hardware and software complex, consisting of the Sectra system and the Hamamatsu NanoZoomer scanner. Sectra will combine digital streams of slides not only from the City Clinical Hospital, but also from the regional Pathology Bureau and the Chelyabinsk Oncology Center.

The equipment of the Chelyabinsk City Clinical Hospital No. 1 was implemented within the framework of regional orders, instructions of the President of the Russian Federation and the Federal Ministry of Health to reduce mortality and increase the life expectancy of the population. A working group of leading clinicians and healthcare organizers was assembled in the region. The result of the group's work was a pilot project for conducting pathology examination using Digital Pathology tools. The main task of the project is to improve the efficiency of doctors' work and reduce the mortality rate of the population. The partner of the Ministry of Health of the Chelyabinsk region was the BioVitrum company. Within the framework of the project, our specialists have implemented a hardware and software complex at City Clinical Hospital No. 1 in Chelyabinsk, which makes it possible to digitize slides and transfer them for analytical work to specialists in different parts of the region. This project is a continuation of the implementation of a single digital circuit in healthcare.

A regional-scale project will make it possible to conduct medical consultations of a multidisciplinary staff, using a single database in their work. Any digital result of human research can be uploaded to the gender-neutral Sectra archive, which not only has the ability to store data, but also to work with it using specialized analytics tools. The new software automates the work of doctors, assists in decision-making using self-learning artificial intelligence algorithms. The final decision when making a diagnosis is made by the doctor, but the system helps him in this with the help of various algorithms. Within the framework of the project, City Clinical Hospital No. 1 tested a set of equipment, consisting of a Hamamatsu Nanozoomer S60 scanner and Sectra specialized software. Specialists used scanners with an average throughput - up to 1000 glasses per day with an average scan time of one glass less than one minute. The specialists of the medical institution conducted an audit of the internal processes of sample preparation, analytical and post-analytical processes, which showed the need for digitalization in the face of an increasing load on the pathological department.   The use of the NanoZoomer slide scanner and the Sectra system will allow to concentrate both digitized slides, data from radiological studies, mammography, MRT, CT and other information from the patient's medical history in a single database accessible to doctors. This approach simplifies patient routing and shortens the time to make a diagnosis. The results of the pilot project will make it possible to organize diagnostics in the Chelyabinsk region at a qualitatively new level. The use of digital technologies will help to shorten the research time, improve the accuracy of diagnosis and targeted therapy. In the long term - the introduction of similar projects in other regions and the creation of a single consultative reference center of the federal scale.
